Sundowner 4th Annual Bull Riding, Barrel Racing & New Year's Dance

Coleman (Okla.)—The 4th Annual Sundowner Stampede P.R.C.A. ProRodeo and Miss Sundowner Rodeo Pageant is Sept. 25-27 at the Sundowner Sports Arena just 14 miles north of Durant on Hwy 48. All-around cowboys and cowgirls will be converging at Sundowner competing for major prize money.

“It’s quite an honor hosting such a prestigious event here,” said Gary Shipman, owner. The Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) is the largest and oldest rodeo organization in the world. It sanctions about 750 rodeos nationwide, offering over $28 million in prize money.

Sundowner offers these athletes the chance to compete here in south central Oklahoma in the following PRCA sanctioned rodeo events: bareback riding, steer wrestling, saddle bronc riding, tie-down roping, and bull riding. Barrel racing performances are included, contestants to follow jackpot rules, with slack taking place both Friday and Saturday mornings.

The children’s rodeo performances start at 7:30 p.m. (signup at 7:00 p.m.), both nights, as youngsters hone their skills at mutton bustin and stick horse riding.

New this year is the Miss Sundowner Rodeo Pageant 2003, where cowgirls from four age groups, 5 to 24 years, compete to win the queen’s title and over $1,000 in prize money.

The pageant runs all day on Sept. 25. Judging to be on horsemanship, personality, appearance, modeling, and rodeo and horse knowledge. Coronation of royalty takes place the first night of the rodeo, Friday, Sept. 26th. Pageant winners go on to compete in the Miss Oklahoma Rodeo Scholarship Pageant. The public is invited to the horsemanship portion of the pageant, starting at 4 p.m., tickets $5. Contact Toni at 580-332-4901 for contestant/pageant information.
